Pond Management (as of May 2012)

21 Jun 2012

Some concern had been raised that the Ponds are not being cleared as they used to be.  This is because the management of the ponds has been changed in the recent updated Plan.  Representatives from Natural England  visited the Common in December 2011 and advised that it would be better to change the current process (where the seven ponds were managed to about the same ecological stage) and let the ponds slowly take their natural cycle. When they became silted up they would be cleared out to create a new pond. This would make the most of the available habitat.  There would always be ponds with open water on the Common and that the cycle could take many years to complete.
