The Friends have a display for the Parish’s WW1 commemorations of “Military Use of the Common 1914-1918 compared with Civilian Life before it”, along with some other displays of local interest.

It will be in the Memorial Hall Common Room from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th November.

There are a number of other events to commemorate the ending of WW1 over that weekend – see the Parish website:


Programme of future regular Ranger Walks and Tasks

Open to everyone. Last Thursday of every month 10.00am – 12.30pm, ending at a pub where people can stay for lunch/a drink if they wish. Certain tasks may take longer and will be advertised as such in advance. Other special walks and events can be added in ad hoc – i.e. bat walks, wild flower walks etc.

25th Oct 2018 – Pond clearance work – duckweed removal, sweet grass and weed croming, silt removal – meet at Cricket Club car park
29th Nov 2018 – Coppicing of gorse, removal of saplings and heather seed sowing – meet at Cricket Club car park
31st Jan 2019 – Coppicing of gorse, removal of saplings & heather seed sowing – meet at Cricket Club car park
28th Feb 2019 – Laurel and holly cutting and marking – meet at Cricket Club car park

Thursday 21st January : 2:30 at the Junction for Lynda Herity to talk  on CHE and historical connections with the Common. Note this has been postponed

AGM planned for Friday 26th February; this could be held at the library or at the Junction.


Thursday November 19th:2.30 at the Junction for Andrew Goddard, Ranger, to talk on on Butterflies, Moths, and plant life on Chorleywood Common.

Saturday 11 July Village Day 12.00 – 4.00: we shall be having our usual double stand and hope to see many of our members on the day. We shall be exhibiting a variety of ‘wild’ pond life for young and older to enjoy, as well as a Quiz on the variety of flora that we have, fixed point photography, and other features that make our Common such an “Uncommon Common”.

Thursday 15 October ”Bird Life on and around Chorleywood Common”: Steve Carter is a local member of the RSPB and will be giving an illustrated talk on our local bird life on 15 October at 2:30 pm at The Junction, Christchurch.

This is at a new time of day and location as has been requested by some members.  Please come along if you can, or of you would prefer alternate times/days for such talks let us know.

Thursday 19 November “Butterflies, Moths and plant life on Chorleywood Common” – 2:30 at The Junction, Christchurch


Thursday 24 April: “Moths on Chorleywood Common” – an illustrated talk by Andy King; in Chorleywood Library, Lower Road, Chorleywood, at 8.00 p.m.  Friends of the Common members £2, non-members £3, under 16s free, including light refreshments – all welcome.

Saturday 3 May: Dawn Chorus Walk, led by Anna Marett; meet at 5.00 a.m. (!) at the Memorial Hall parking area.  Please note: numbers have to be limited (a large group makes its own sounds, which can drown out birdsong at a distance); to reserve a place, please contact Greg Hill, e-mail or phone (01923) 283555, after Easter.

Friday 16 May: “Pond Dipping”, led by the Common Ranger, Andrew Goddard; meet at 6.00 p.m. in Christ Church car park.   Bring your children or grandchildren, and your wellies; everyone welcome.

Saturday 21 June: “Edible and Medicinal Plants”, led by Victoria Stainsby; meet at Shepherds Bridge parking area at 3 p.m.

Saturday 12 July: Village Day – FoCC will have a stall.

Sunday 27 July: “Wildflowers and Butterflies”, led by Martin Hicks of Hertfordshire Ecology; meet at Christ Church car park (by the churchyard lych-gate), at 2.30 p.m.


Sunday 28 July: Wild Flowers and Butterflies walk, led by Martin Hicks (senior ecology officer, Herts Biological Records Centre): meet at 2.30 pm at Christ Church car park.

Sunday 23 June: Herb Walk, led by Victoria Stainsby: meet at 3 pm at Shepherds Bridge parking area.

Friday 7 June: Pond Dipping, for children: meet at 6 pm at Christ Church car park; old clothes, wellington boots and nets recommended.

Sunday 5 May: “Beating the Bounds”, organised by the Parish Council.  Walk the circumference of the Common, a family event.  Meet at Christs Church car park  2 pm.
